There are so many myths and misconceptions about Africa still floating around, even now in the year 2017, but we’re breaking it down and debunking 5 of these myths below.
1. “Africa is a country.”
Africa is actually a continent, not a country. Africa is made up of 54 different countries, which are each in turn made up of various regions and cities.
2. “Africa is always hot.”
Africa is not just made up of the Sahara desert. There are also high mountains and tropical forests, and in some areas the temperatures are below zero at night.
3. “Africa is all desert.”
Although Africa is home to the Sahara desert, the whole African continent is not a desert. The Sahara desert only covers one third of Africa.
4. “Africa shares one culture.”
This is not at all true, as tons of different groups live across Africa and each has its own culture. Both Tunisia and Nigeria are a part of Africa, and their cultures are majorly different.
5. “African is a language.”
In Nigeria alone, there are 521 different spoken languages. This misconception is heavily associated with the misconception that Africa is a country with one culture.
